CHAPTER 31

A few minutes later, Oliver was walking through the estate in his 70’s retro outfit. He thought he looked rather good, despite what Riz thought. He got a few looks from people who walked past him, he thought they were admiring glances. He walked towards the group of teenagers and young men loitering by one of the staircases at the base of a block of flats. He kept his sunglasses on so his eyes were hidden. His radio was also switched for two-way transmission, but only on the frequency he shared with Riz. Riz could hear the conversation.

‘’ey up,’ Oliver called out as he approached the group. The men turned to look at him.

‘Who are yer, Jimmy Savile?’ One of them cackled, and the others burst into laughter. Oliver ignored them.

‘I’m new here,’ he said, getting closer, dropping his voice. ‘I heard there’s a place where you can get some birds, like. You know.’ He wiggled his eyebrows, and made a lewd gesture with his hands.

The men had disbelieving looks on their faces, which Oliver mistook for admiration. He whispered, ‘My mate told me. There’s some birds who do that round ’ere. Eh?’

One of the men folded his arms across his chest and frowned. ‘Who are yer? Not seen you before.’

‘Cos I’m new. My name’s Brian. I live at number 274, in that block. Moved in last week.’

‘Where you from?’

‘Scunthorpe. Sunny Scunny.’ Oliver grinned.

‘Do they dress like that in Scunny? Not goin’ to work ’ere, mate.’

‘Aye, I know. Been getting’ odd looks an’ that. I used to DJ in a pub see, seventies throwback music. Kind of got used to wearing these clothes.’ He was getting a little nervous, and let out a fake laugh. ‘Anyway. You lads know the place I’m talking about?’

There was a change in the group’s attitude. Several of the men looked at each other. The one with a shaven head, who seemed to be the leader, stared at Oliver unblinkingly.

‘Who told yer about them?’

‘My mate Paddy. Irish lad from Loxley. He comes here for that stuff, you know.’

The man stared at Oliver for a while, then shrugged. ‘620, in block eight. No skin off my back, like. Now bugger off, Jimmy Savile.’

Mission accomplished, and the dodgy compliment ringing in his ears, Oliver walked off. When he was out of earshot, and under the cover of a pillar, he turned up the knob on his radio.

‘Did you hear that? Job done.’

‘Stop talking to me, you moron,’ Riz hissed. ‘Find out what you can and get the hell out. I ain’t comin’ after you if you get stuck.’

‘Oh yes you are.’ Oliver hung up. He squared his shoulders and smiled. Riz was just jealous he didn’t think of it himself.

He took his sunglasses off and followed signs to the block. He took the stairs up as he didn’t want to see anyone in the lifts. He was perspiring by the time he got to the sixth floor. The shell suit didn’t breathe very well. Huffing, and wiping sweat from his brow, Oliver knocked on door number 620.
